Description

(54) A PLURALITY OF SEAT ASSEMBLIES AND A LITTER BIN (71) We, THE GREATER LONDON COUNCIL, of County Hall, London, S.E.1., a British Body Corporate do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to a plurality of seat assemblies and a litter bin.
According to the invention there is provided a plurality of seat assemblies and a litter bin, each seat assembly comprising a plurality of spaced apart pedestal means supported by a substrate such as the ground, and a seat secured to and extending between the pedestal means, the seat or the pedestal means having a rebated portion in which the pedestal means or seat is received so that the seat and pedestal means present a seat support surface which lies in a single plane, the litter bin being mounted in a complementary shaped recess in a boundary surface of one of the plurality of seat assemblies.
Seat assemblies and litter bins embodying the invention are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to Figures 1 to 8c of the drawings filed with the Provisional Specification and to Figures 9A to 9E of the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view of part of a seat assembly; Figure 2 shows an elevation of the assembly of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a side elevational view of a screen structure such as a bus shelter or walkway shelter which can be incorporated in the seat assembly of Figure 1; Figure 4 shows a plan view of the structure of Figure 3; Figures Sa to 5d show respectively a plan view, a side elevation, a longitudinal section and a rear elevation of an embodiment of litter bin for use with the seat assembly of Figure 1;; Figures 6a to 6E show respectively a plan view, a side elevation, a longitudinal section, a fragmented section on the line B-B, and a fragmented section on the line A-A of'a second embodiment of litter bin for use with the seat assembly of Figure 1; Figures 7a to 7c show respective end, side, and plan views of a catch release tool for use with the litter bin of Figure 6; Figures 8a to 8d show respective perspective, elevation, plan and half sectional views of a plant pot, seat of litter bin; and Figures 9A to 9E show views of a litter bin, Figure 9B being a section on links A-A of Figure 9A and Figure 9C being a section on line B-B of Figure 9B.
Referring to the drawings, Figures 1 to 4 show an assembly of street furniture comprising litter bins and seat assemblies 2, each of which has pedestal means in the form of a support or pedestal 3, and a screen 4 which is an arrangement of units 5, seen in plan view in Figure 4.
Each of the items comprises the street furniture and has a boundary surface profile which is complementary to that of one or more of the other items so that when assembled together, as in Figure 1, a co-ordinated assembly of connected, interengaged or nesting units is obtained which is pleasing to the eye. The curved boundary surface 6 of a litter bin 1 can thus rest in the curved boundary surface part 7 of a pedestal 3, while a stepped boundary surface 8 of the pedestal 3 receives a stepped end 9 of the seat 2. It will be understood that the different items can be assembled in any desired configuration.
Also, additional fixing means such as nuts and bolts can be used to secure adjacent items, such as bin 1 and pedestal 3, together.
Referring now to Figures 5a to 5d, the litter bin shown 10 has a circular cylindrical body 11 comprising two semi-cylindrical halves 12 and 13 which are hinged together so that they can be opened in the direction of the arrow X so that access can be gained to an inner wire mesh basket 14. The bin 10 has a central hole 15 through which litter can be passed but which has a smaller diameter than the diameter of the basket 14.
A simple latch 16 holds the halves 12 and 13 together in the closed position. The lower end of the body 11 has a shoulder 17 for seating on an upturned rim 18 of a base, which is itself secured to the ground by a bolt 19. The base has drainage holes 20. The base and the leaf 12 of the cylinder 11 can be bonded together at the junction of the flange 18 and shoulder 17.
A second embodiment of litter bin 30 is shown in Figures 6a to 6E. It is similar to that of Figures 5a to 5d, in that it has a cylindrical body 31 which has a hole 32 for litter which is of smaller diameter than an internal basket 33 and is mounted on a base 34. The litter bin has, however, a removable top 35 which is held in place by a spring catch mechanism 36 at diametrically opposite sides. Each mechanism 36 comprises a spring 37 which is secured interiorly peripherally of the top 35 and in use extends into the main or lower, as viewed in Figure 6E, part 38 of the body. The part 38 has a releasable spring catch 39 which has a hook or flange 40 for engagement with a peripheral roll lip 41 on the spring 37. When the top 35 is lowered into position on the lower part 38, the roll lip 41 and hook or flange 40 engage automatically as shown. To release the catch mechanism a catch release tool 42 (Figure 7) is inserted through a keyhole 43 to move the hook or lip 40 towards the centre of the body so that the lip 41 is freed. The top 35 can then be lifted off. The basket or liner 33 and the catch mechanism 36 can be made of galvanised mild steel.
Figures 8a to 8d show views of a moulded unit which can be used when it is one way up as a flower pot or litter bin, and when it is the other way up as a seat, or in a group as a stage or platform. The base 44 has drain holes 45, and the top a central aperture 46 and is strengthened by an integral thickened peripherl boundary lip 47, or it can have an inturned hook shape lip.
The moulded unit can be of any convenient size, and can hold one or more baskets for collecting litter or for holding flowers.
Referring now to Figures 9A to 9E a litter bin which has a glass reinforced cement cylindrical body of minimum wall thickness 10 mm an annular base for supporting a liner and a circular foot depending from the base and on which the bin rests. The circular foot has a drainage hole for water through it, and there are two holes through the base through which rag bolts are passed to secure the bin to the ground. A support bracket in the form of an metal angle section is secured to the interior of the body by pop rivets which are each in a counter sunk recess which are made good with cement after insertion. There is an internally projecting limb of the bracket which ensures that a liner of the bin is eccentrically positioned inside the bin.The liner has two pivoted handles for facilitating its removal and insertion. It is made of mild steel of 20 S.W.G. and has two bottom drainage holes which in use are aligned with two similar holes of the bin base. The liner has a depending peripheral wall acting as a foot whereby it rests on the base of the body. The bin is free standing.
All the items described are suitably made from glass reinforced cement. However, they can be made from any suitable material, for example phenolic resin, other synthetic plastics or metal. Thus the top 35 of the bin 30 may be spun from metal.

A plurality of seat assemblies and a litter bin, each seat assembly comprising a plurality of spaced apart pedestal means supported by a substrate such as the ground, and a seat secured to and extending between the pedestal means, the seat or the pedestal means having a rebated portion in which the pedestal means or seat is received so that the seat and pedestal means present a seat support surface which lies in a single plane, the litter bin being mounted in a complementary shaped recess in a boundary surface of one of the plurality of seat assemblies.
