Description

(54) TEMPERATURE AND THICKNESS MONITOR (71) We, TROLEX PRODUCTS LIMITED, a British Company of Newby Road, Hazel Grove, Stockport, Cheshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a device for monitoring the thickness of a brake lining.
In hazardous areas, such as in coal mines, it is important that a warning of some kind is given when the thickness of the brake lining is reduced to a predetermined level.
The purpose of such a warning is to enable the lining to be replaced before the brake stops working efficiently. In addition to monitoring the thickness of the brake lining it is also desirable to monitor the temperature thereof because if the temperature rises that may cause ignition of gases or dust and an explosion may then occur.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for monitoring the thickness of a brake lining comprising a semiconductor device provided in the lining at a predetermined distance initially from the braking surface thereof, said semiconductor device being connected to a fail-safe circuit, so that said fail-safe circuit is actuated when the lining has worn away and the semiconductor device is damaged whereby the device no longer operates.
In a preferred embodime-nt of the invention the semi-conductor device is a diode whose operation varies with the temperature thereof. The semiconductor is connected to a power supply and to the coil of a relay so that in operation the relay contacts are held open. When the lining is reduced in thickness so that the diode is damaged by the brake drum the circuit is broken and the relay contacts close to complete an alarm circuit.
Current sensing means may also be provided, variations of current giving an indication of changes of temperature. The sensing means may also be linked to an alarm circuit so that when a predetermined temperature is attained an alarm will sound.
A special embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a section through a part of a brake.
Referring to the drawing an aperture 10 extends through brake shoe 12 into a brake lining 14 of a brake. A plug 16 of electrically non-conductive material, such as plastics, for example an epoxy resin, is received in aperture 10. A diode 18 is embedded in the plug, terminals 20 for the diode being provided on the exposed part of the plug by which the diode is connected in a detector circuit.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A device for monitoring the thickness of a brake lining comprising a semiconductor device provided in the lining at a predetermined distance initially from the braking surface thereof, said semiconductor device being connected to a fail-safe circuit, so that said fail-safe circuit is actuated when the lining has worn away and the semi-conductor device is damaged whereby the device no longer operates.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the semiconductor is temperature responsive.
3. A device as claimed in Claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the semiconductor is connected to a power supply and to the coil of a relay so that, in operation, the relay contacts are held open.
4. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the semiconductor is embedded in a plug of non-conductive material received in an aperture in the brake lining.
5. A device for monitoring the thickness of a brake lining substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
