Description

(54) FALSE CEILING ASSEMBLY (71) I, ALBERTO ROSA FINA, a Spanish citizen of Carretera S245, Km 10 San Baudilio De Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a false ceiling assembly permitting a very rapid installation and a satisfactory appearance.
The provision of false ceilings entails a problem which is difficult to solve, namely, to achieve rapid and effective fitting of the false ceiling-forming plates or tiles.
This problem has been solved in a safis- factory manner by the present invention.
According to the present invention there is provided a false ceiling assembly comprising elongate elements (a) adapted to be fixed substantially parallel to one another by fixing means to a ceiling, elongate channel section elements (b) adapted to be fixed substantially parallel to one another and transversely to the elements (a) by fixing means in such a manner that the longitudinal openings of the channel section elements (b) face downwards, and false ceiling-forming plates or tiles (c) adapted to be suspended below the elements (b) by means of resilient connecting tongues (d), one end of each tongue being adapted to be fixed to a plate or tile (c) and the other end of each tongue being adapted to be resiliently held by the longitudinal opening of a said element (b) when the false ceiling assembly is suspended from the ceiling, wherein the plates or tiles (c) are provided with boundary side walls extending substantially perpendicular from the plane of the plate or tile and opposite side walls of each plate or tile (c) are provided with tongues (d) extending in substantially the same direction as the respective side walls and wherein adjacent to a tongue (d) on each side wall of each plate or tile (c) there is a cut-out portion intended to accommodate the abutting portion of a tongue (d) of an adjacent plate or tile (c) of the constructed false ceiling.
Preferably each plate or tile (c) is one which has been made as a unit with tongues (d) fixed to the plate or tile, for example the tongue (d) may have been rivetted or otherwise fixed to the plates or tiles. Each tongue may be bifurcate, for instance it may comprise a pair of resilient outwardly curved metal arms. Generally the plates or tiles (c) will be substantially rectangular, e.g. square.
In one convenient form of the invention the fixing means for fixing element (a) to element (b) comprise a channel-section member (e) through which a said element (b) is insertable and retainable by the member (e), the member (e) having a threaded pin adapted to pass through a corresponding aperture which is provided in said element (a) to which the threaded pin of member (e) is adapted to be fixed and retained by a retaining nut applied to the threaded pin.
Expediently each plate or tile (c) has a said pair of opposite side walls in which each side wall has a pair of spaced apart tongues (d) directly facing said cut-out portions.
There is also provided in accordance with this invention a structure comprising a false ceiling which has been constructed by means of the false ceiling assembly of the invention.
The accompanying drawings describe by way of example one plreferred embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the false ceiling structure with the plates or tiles detached; Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the components of the structure in the dismantled state; Figure 3 shows in perspective a detail of one of the detached plates or tiles; Figure 4 is a cross-section corresponding to Figure 3; Figure 5 is a view in longitudinal section of the structure installed with one board; Figure 6 is a similar view but with two plates or tiles fitted in position, and Figure 7 is a view in cross-section corresponding to Figure 6.
The false ceiling assembly described comprises a structure composed of elongate ele ments 1 of U-section intended to be fastened to an existing ceiling by conventional means (not shown) and provided with apertures 2 for the passage of threaded pins 3 welded to brackets 4 of C-shaped cross-section, retaining nuts 5 being screwed on the pins 3.
The brackets 4 hold elongate elements 6 of channel section, which have a C-shaped cross-section similar to that of the brackets 4 and which are situated transversely in relation to the elements 1, forming a supporting structure of tray-shaped plates or tiles 7 which constitute the visible false ceiling surface.
These plates or tiles 7 are provided on two opposite side walls with tongues 8 composed of pairs of springy sheet metal arms. The tongues 8 are situated in offset positions on one side wall in relation to those tongues on the opposed side wall as seen in Figure 1.
Alternating with the tongues 8, the side walls of the plates or tiles 7 have cut-out portions 9 whose positions coincide with that of directly facing tongues 8 on the opposite side wall of the plate or tile 7.
In order to instal the illustrated false ceiling assembly the procedure is generally as follows: it is first necessary to mount the elements 1 on an existing ceiling and then place in position the elements 6 supported by the brackets 4 which are fastened to the elements 1. Once the elements 6 have been placed in position the plates or tiles 7 are fastened to the elements 6. For this purpose the tongues 8 are introduced into bottom openings 6a of the elements 6, it being borne in mind that the cut-out portions 9 on one plate or tile 7 coincide with the tongues 8 on the adjacent plate or tile 7 (Figure 3).The resilient tongues 8 are inserted into the openings 6a under pressure (Figure 4), the elasticity of the tongues being sufficient to hold securely the plates or tiles 7 connected to the elements 6, while nevertheless permitting their removal when necessary, either for operations for servicing, repairing, or maintaining any installations which may be situated above the assembled false ceiling, or for the replacement of plates or tiles 7 of the latter.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A false ceiling assembly comprising elongate elements (a) adapted to be fixed substantially parallel to one another by fixing means to a ceiling, elongate channel section elements (b) adapted to be fixed substantially parallel to one another and transversely to the elements (a) by fixing means in such a manner that the longitudinal openings of the channel section elements (b) face downwards, and false ceiling-forming plates or tiles (c) adapted to be suspended below the elements (b) by means of resilient connecting tongues (d), one end of each tongue being adapted to be fixed to a plate or tile (c) and the other end of each tongue being adapted to be resiliently held by the longitudinal opening of a said element (b) when the false ceiling assembly is suspended from the ceiling, wherein the plates or tiles (c) are provided with boundary side walls extending substantially perpendicular from the plane of the plate or tile and opposite side walls of each plate or tile (c) are provided with tongues (d) extending in substantially the same direction as the respective side walls and wherein adjacent to a tongue (d) on each side wall of each plate or tile (c) there is a cut-out portion intended to accommodate the abutting portion of a tongue (d) of an adjacent plate or tile (c) of the constructed false ceiling.
2. A false ceiling assembly according to Claim 1, wherein each tongue (d) is bifurcate.
3. A false ceiling assembly according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the plates or tiles (c) are substantially rectangular.
4. A false ceiling assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixing means for fixing element (a) to element (b) comprise a channel-section member (e) through which a said element (b) is insertable and retainable by the member (e), the member (e) having a threaded pin adapted to pass through a corresponding aperture which is provided in said element (a) to which the threaded pin of member (e) is adapted to be fixed and retained by a retaining nut applied to the threaded pin.
5. A false ceiling assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein each plate or tile (c) has a said pair of opposite side walls in which each side wall has a pair of spaced apart tongues (d) directly facing said cut-out portions.
6. A false ceiling assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein each plate or tile (c) is one which has been made as a unit with tongues (d) fixed to the plate or tile.
7. A false ceiling assembly substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 to 7 of the accompanying drawings.
8. A structure comprising a false ceiling which has been constructed by means of the false ceiling assembly claimed in any preceding
