Abstract
160,017. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Dec. 22, 1919. Protective arrangements. - To prevent damage to the supports of transmission line wires by surges of steep wave front which might arc over and destroy the insulation, the live wire, Fig. 1, is supported by a capacitance, such as the insulator 3, and a resistance 4 in series therewith. The arrangement is stated to act selectively, so that, under normal conditions, the voltage across the support is practically all across the capacitance, whereas, under surge conditions, the voltage is across the resistance. The resistance preferably consists of a rod 5, Fig. 3, of carbon, &c., enclosed in an insulating casing 6 of porcelain, &c., fitted with ends caps 7.
