Abstract
160,007. Hamilton, W. Dec. 19, 1919. Cutting-appliances. - Relates to electrically driven hand or portable machines having an endless knife for cutting cloth &c., and consists in (1) constructing the knife so that it cuts when driven in either direction, (2) a vertical shaft drive for the knife sprockets through a friction clutch from a motor arranged above the sprockets, (3) the provision of an operating-handle and adjacent controlling switches, and (4) the provision of a presser-foot in front of the knife. A standard B on a base C supports a casing A, preferably of aluminium, and an electric motor H which drives the endless-band knife D through friction bevelgear G, G', the knife passing over sprockets E, E<1>. The sprocket E is carried by a frame F which may be adjusted by a pinion F and a rack. The wheel G is movable on the motor shaft h against a spring h' for de-clutching the motor, the lever g moving this wheel also moving a friction wheel g<1> against a similar wheel g<2> to act as a brake. A handle a is provided for moving the device over the table, a switch K for starting the motor, and a switch K<1> for reversing. The blades d' form alternate links of the endless chain and are sharpened on both edges. A presser-foot M with a graduated stem is provided, a lamp o in front of the device and a grinding-wheel N is mounted with a universal movement on an arm n which may be swung out of the way when not in use. The knife may be formed of blades attached to a flexible steel or other band, or may be formed of links provided with serrated-teeth for cutting wood or metal. In this case the drive may be from a fiexible shaft from a motor outside the machine.
