Abstract

Valves.-In a two-strode engine in which a sliding sleeve B moves between the working piston C and the cylinder, the cylinder is of two diameters, as described in Specification 119,057, the lower portion forming a pump space i<a>. The sleeve is driven from an eccentric P working on the slotted crank-pin Q. The lower portion of the sleeve is extended, and governs an inlet port L or inlet ports or an inlet valve. On the downward stroke of the sleeve, the charge is drawn in through the port L and passes from the space I<a> through ports V in the sleeve into the annular space I between the sleeve and the piston. The charge is compressed on the upward stroke of the piston and the sleeve, and, when the top of the annular space I reaches recesses B<1> in the sleeve, the charge passes into the combustion chamber, in which it is further compressed by the piston. To reduce resistance to the upward movement of the sleeve by the portion of the charge remaining in the space I<a>, this portion, when a port Y in the sleeve registers with a recess X in the cylinder wall, passes into a chamber W in the sleeve. The exhaust port or ports M communicate with an annular exhaust passage N and are controlled by the top edge of, or by a port or ports in, the sleeve B, so as to remain open for 140‹ or more of the cycle.
