Abstract
166,160. Bennis, A. W. April 20, 1917. Fire-bars and grates.-A travelling grate in which the upper run is preferably inclined, but may be horizontal, is provided with links or bars of the overlapping type having a fuel-supporting surface 19<a>, Fig. 21, (which shows links or bars in their simplest form), inclined to the plane intersecting a pair of pivotal connections 19<c>, 19<d>, one of these connections 19<c> lying outside the projection of the fuel-supporting surface on the plane intersecting the pivotal connections and on the side of the fuel-supporting surface remote from the intersection of the plane of the fuelsupporting surface and the plane of the pivotal connections. The air spaces 19<e> formed between the links or bars are cleared of ashes &c. by the part 19f of the fuel surface as the links or bars travel round the rear supporting drum of the grate. Fig. 3 shows a portion of a grate having links or bars with curved upper surfaces, the central portion 20 of which, or the tangent thereto, lies horizontally when traversing the upper run of the grate and is inclined to the front and rear lips 21, 22, the tangents to which are substantially parallel. The links or bars are provided with lugs 25 for the reception of bolts 28 by which the links or bars are united to form a continuous chain. The sprockets on the driving-drums may engage with the lugs 25 or the bolts 28. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the bars 32 are connected by bolts 30 to a driving chain which takes the driving strain instead of the bars. The bars are provided with cooling or strengthening ribs 33 beneath the front lip portions and to clear the ribs. According to a modification shown in Fig. 9, the ends of alternate bars engaging with the driving chain are of slightly different design. The bars 34 are provided with lugs 37 arranged on the inside of the driving chain 38, and the bars 35 are provided with lugs 36 arranged on the outside, the lugs being connected to the chain by bolts. Fig. 11 shows a modified form of bar 43 having a detachable fuel surface 42 secured by countersunk bolts 44. The links or bars 70, shown in Figs. 14 and 15, are threaded on bolts 72 secured to the driving-chains, and are provided with flanges 79 forming extensions of the rear lips 81. The spaces 82 between the fuelsupporting surfaces 80 and the flanges 79 permit the passage of air to the fuel and these spaces. Fig. 17 shows a modified form of bar extending across the whole width of the grate and provided with air spaces having enlarged inlets 83 and side flanges 84 for retaining the fuel on the bars. According to the Provisional Specification, the links may be of the drop-link type. The fuel surfaces may be waved or corrugated and the sides of the bars or links may also be formed so as to provide waved, fluted or like air spaces between the bars or links.
