Abstract
164,859. Rope, F. M. March 17, 1920. Pressure and vacuum gauges; rate of change of pressure, measuring.-Relates to instruments for indicating the speed of ascent or descent of aircraft of the type wherein differences in pressure between the external atmosphere and the air in a heat-insulated chamber communicating with the atmosphere through a leakage device, are indicated bv a manometer. A heat-insulated air chamber 1 communicates with the external atmosphere through a capillary tube 10 and a filter 9. The lower side of a pressure-gauge 6, of spring-controlled diaphragm type, communicates at 11 with the interior of the air-chamber 1, and the upper side 5 of the gauge communicates through pipe 14 directly to the outer atmosphere through the filter 8. Pressure changes in the chamber 1 lag behind changes in the atmosphere, thereby operating the pressuregauge and giving an indication on the graduated dial 7. The pressure-gauge may, in a modification, be fixed externally to the air chamber, and a length of wire may be inserted in the capillary tube 10 in order to increase the sensibility of the instrument.
