Variable-speed ratchet gearing.-The number of teeth of the ratchet wheel of the traverse or building-mechanism of machines for winding yarns or threads taken by the pawl is varied by altering the length of the chain 13, Fig. 1, connecting the pawl with its operating crank 15 so that, when the pawl oscillates between the limits c, d, Fig. 3, the number of teeth taken is greater than the number taken when it oscillates between the limits a, b.
