Abstract

164,414. Percival, S., (Viscoloid Co.). Feb. 3, 1920. Pins, dress and like. -In making hair pins from cylindrical blanks the blanks are transferred from a hopper to a heating table, along which they are rolled and from which they are transferred one at a time to centering guides, from which they are moved by dies which bend them to shape. The blanks 20, Fig. 4, are fed from a hopper 21 with converging walls by a number of spaced felt-covered segmental discs 41, which are mounted on a shaft 40, Fig. 2, oscillated through levers 39, 38, 37 bv a cam 35 on a shaft 34 driven from the main shaft 25 by gears 33, 32, 31, 29, 28, 27. The blanks are then rolled along the steam table 22 by a reciprocating plate 56 with a felt or rubber bottom so as to prevent warping of or to straighten the blanks. The plate has two pairs of bars 55 resting on corresponding cams 54 on a pair of shafts 53, 59 connected together by links 60. The shafts 53, 59 are oscillated to lift the plate by a cam 45, Fig. 8, on the shaft 30 engaging a spring-retracted lever 47 so as to force a projection 50 carried thereby into contact with an arm 52 on the shaft 53. When the plate is raised it is forced rearwards by a cam 63 on the shaft 34. It then falls and is pulled forward by a spring while in contact with the blanks to roll them along the table 22 one by one down an inclined wall 67 into a notch 24 in a roll 23, Fig. 4, which is oscillated to transfer the blank under a guard 69 on to a guide 68 from which it drops on to the table 71. The roll is oscillated by a rack bar 77, Fig. 2, passing between a pinion 79 in the roll shaft, and a guide roll 78, the bar being connected to a lever 76 operated by a cam 74 on the shaft 73. The ends of the blank are received in recesses in pivoted arms 107 with inclined side walls 105 and an inclined end wall 106 so as to centre the blank. The arms are held in their raised positions by projections 108, thereon engaging the pivoted benders 97, but drop by gravity when the benders move forward to bend the blank round the formers 98, 99, 100. The benders 97 are mounted on shafts 95 provided with spiral springs so that the benders are normally in their inoperative position. The shafts are provided with pinions and are oscillated to perform the bending operation by a pair of rack bars 92 operated by cams 90, Fig. 4. The blank is shaped round the pin 98 by a spring-pressed die 115, mounted on a rod 113 which is retracted by a cam 110. The completed article is pressed through the opening 102 by the head 87 of a plunger 84 which is pressed by a cam 80 against the action of a spring 86. The article is cooled by water passages 120. The shaft 30 is mounted on a casing 118 containing lubricating oil and provided with a drain 119.
