Abstract
1536864 Testing adhesion of webs MOLINS Ltd 2 Sept 1976 [2 Sept 1975] 36013/75 Heading G1S The adhesion between two webs CW, WW, at least one of which carries a line of adhesive, is tested by driving the webs at the same speed, compressing the webs into adhesive contact, feeding the united webs along a straight path, separating the webs by passing them around a pair of spaced pulleys 38 at opposite sides of the path, and measuring the force on at least one of the pulleys. The webs are fed from reels 2, 4 into reservoirs 6 and then over a convex guide shoe 8 which have perforated surfaces to which suction is applied to tension the webs. Web CW passes a heater 11 and adhesive applicator 12. The webs are united by means of a pair of rollers 16, 18 mounted on a crosshead vertically adjustable on guides 27. Roller 16 is fixed to the crosshead but roller 18 is mounted on a lever 20 pivoted to the crosshead, and the compressive force applied to the webs by roller 18 is determined by weight 24 hung from the lever. The separating pulleys 38 are mounted on cantilever springs 34 which carry strain gauges and which are mounted on holders 36 slidable in slots 32 of a cross-bar 28. The holders 36 allow the inclination of the springs 34 and the separation of the pulleys 38 to be adjusted, and cross-bar 28 is adjustable vertically along guides 30. The separated webs pass between drive rollers 40, 42, the position of each drive roller 42 around the corresponding roller 40 being adjusted so that the respective web passes both rollers tangentially. From the forces acting on the pulleys 38 as measured by the strain gauges on the springs 34, the position of the point of separation S of the webs, and the geometry of the device, the adhesive force between the webs may be calculated. The webs may be of wrapper and imitation cork material or used in cigarette manufacture, or may both be of the wrapper material. The adhesive may be be polyvinl acetate, starch paste or a hot melt adhesive. The webs may be pre-coated with adhesive.
