Abstract
1535440 Carbon fibres TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 15 Dec 1976 52430/76 Heading C1A Carbon fabrics are made by heat treating a precursor polyacrylonitrile fabric in an active atmosphere which can react with the polyacrylonitrile fabric to stabilize it against further heat treatment i.e. carbonization substantially without tension and carbonizing the heat treated fabric in an inert atmosphere, the precursor fabric containing less than 0À5% by weight of oiling agents. The precursor fabric may initially contain less than this proportion of oiling agent, or may be washed with water, solvent or heated to reduce the proportion to less than 0À5%, especially less than 0À3% by weight of oiling agent. Heat treatment may be effected at 200 to 400‹ C., in an active atmosphere of air, oxygen, nitric oxide or sulphur dioxide, and carbonization may be effected at at least 1000‹ C.in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen, helium or argon. Graphitization at at least 2000‹ C. may follow carbonization. The fibre may be treated either in filamentary or fabric form. Fibres suitable for forming the precursor fabric typically show a tensile strength of at least 230 Kg per sq mm and a Young's Modulus of at least 18 X 10<SP>3</SP> Kg per sq mm.
