Abstract

1535282 Oil-water separator CJB DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 17 May 1977 [18 June 1976] 25448/76 Heading BID Apparatus for removing oil from water draining from inside a retaining wall round an oil-storage tank comprises a housing with an inlet chamber 2 connected by a parallel plate separator 3 with a water outlet chamber 4, oil rising from the separator to flow over weir 7 into collecting chamber 8, which has therein a float 16 which closes the inlet valve 14 to chamber 2 when the oil level rises in chamber 8. Fig. 1 also shows a second float 13 actuating a hydraulic relay 11 to close another valve upstream of the valve 14. Both valves close automatically when catches holding them open are released, so that a major spillage of oil is not passed through the apparatus to the drain. The inlet 1 may include an adjustable choke valve or narrow pipe section to restrict flow to a level which the separator 3 can accommodate, the upstream retaining wall acting as a reservoir during heavy rainfall. Separator 3 comprises 12 corrugated plates 2cms. apart and inclined at 45‹. Chamber 4 has an adjustable overflow 5 for water, and chamber 8 an outlet 9 for oil.
