Abstract
3,5-Xylenol is obtained in good yield by heating isophorone (3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexen-2-one) to a temperature of 450 to 650 DEG C in the presence of chlorine, bromine or iodine or of an organic compound containing such a halogen. The use of the abovementioned homogeneous catalysts avoids the disadvantages of the known, solid catalysts which are caused by carbon deposition.
