Abstract
1533778 Head adjustment in magnetic disc data systems BASF AG 17 March 1976 [2 Dec 1975] 10651/76 Heading G5R For use in adjusting the position of a magnetic head (13), Fig. 1 (not shown), when setting up a magnetic disc data system, a magnetic test disc has at least one test track (14) recorded with groups of first test signals, such as 4 to 9, Fig. 2, with intervening second test signals, such as 1 to 3, which have different amplitudes to those of the first signals, the first signals extending alternately on one side and then the other of the centre line 18 of the test track. The disc may be flexible and rotated at 360 r.p.m. The second signals are symmetrical relative to the centre line 18 and are arranged so that the test track has groups I, II &c. of test signals, each group having three of the second signals 1, 2, 3 and six of the first signals 4 to 9, there being from 4 to 36 such groups, preferably 6 or 12, in each test track. If the data system uses recording frequencies f and 2f, e.g. 250 KHz and 500 KHz, each of the signals 2 and 4 to 9 is recorded at f and each of the signals 1 and 3 at 2f. If the disc is running true with the head (13) accurately on the centreline 18, the test signals between lines 20 and 21 in Fig. 2 are reproduced with the relative amplitudes in Fig. 3 for display on an oscilloscope. If the disc is running eccentrically and/or the head is not accurately on the centreline, the replay amplitude U 1fi of the signals 4, 6, 8 differs from that U 1fo of the signals 5, 7, 9 and to achieve optimum positioning the head 13 is shifted until the difference of such amplitudes for group n of the test signals is equal to such difference for group n+N/2 and the head (13) is then locked in position, N being the number of groups I, II &c. (each consisting of signals 1 to 9) in the test track. The replay signals U 2fc corresponding to test signals 1 and 3 are used for azimuth adjustment of the head (13).
