Abstract
1531621 Cationic electrodepositable compositions PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 21 Jan 1976 2329/76 Heading C3B [Also in Division C7] An aqueous dispersion suitable for use as a cationic electrodepositable composition comprises (A) a synthetic adduct which is the reaction product of a primary and/or secondary amine and an epoxy group containing resin, said adduct being solubilized with acid to provide cationic groups, and (B) a blocked organic polyisocyanate stable at ambient temperature in the presence of said adduct and reactive with said adduct at elevated temperatures. Component (A) is preferably an acid-solubilized adduct of a secondary amine and a polyglycidyl ether of a polyphenol, e.g. bisphenol A. The polyglycidyl ether may be carboxylic acid modified preferably with pelargonic acid. The organic polyisocyanate may be blocked with an alkanol, a cyclo-alkanol, an aromatically-substituted alkanol, a phenol, an oxime or a tertiary hydroxylamine. The composition may contain pigments, e.g. iron oxides, lead oxides, strontium chromate, carbon black, TiO 2 , talc, barium sulphate, Cd yellow or red and chromic yellow. The aqueous composition preferably has a pH of 3-9 for electro-deposition. After cathodic electro-deposition on a suitable substrate, e.g. steel, Al or Cu, the coatings are cured at elevated temperatures, e.g. 250-600‹ F. In the examples, zinc phosphated steel panels are cathodically coated using the above aqueous compositions.
