1530821 Chlorinating a polymer blend; and recovery thereof IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Dec 1976 [2 Feb 1976 27 July 1976 27 Aug 1976] 03999/76 31237/76 and 38362/76 Divided out of 1503976 Addition to 1503976 Headings C3P C3L and C3E A mixture of polymers is chlorinated in a solvent and recovered by contact with water or steam, the polymers comprising an aliphatic polymer (1) and up to an equal amount of a second polymer (2) having a second order transition temperature, when chlorinated, at least 20‹ C. below that of (1) when chlorinated. Polymer (2) improves the efficiency of the recovery process. The starting polymers are (1) natural rubber or a polymer of isoprene or butadiene, and (2) polybutadiene, a partially chlorinated polybutadiene or a butadiene copolymer. The example refers to the chlorination of a mixture of degraded cis-1,4-polyisoprene and a butadiene/α-methylstyrene copolymer in carbontetrachloride, followed by precipitation in hot water.
