Abstract
1529735 Nitric acid SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SpA 5 Dec 1975 [20 Dec 1974] 50108/75 Heading C1A A process for producing nitric acid having a concentration of at least 98 wt. per cent comprises: (a) in a first stage, (i) subjecting ammonia to catalytic oxidation so as to produce a first gas comprising water and nitric oxide; and (ii) removing water from the gas and converting the nitric oxide therein to nitrogen dioxide so as to produce a second gas 25 comprising nitrogen dioxide; (b) in a second stage (i) contacting the second gas 25 with a liquor comprising nitric acid 26 having a concentration of at least 80 wt. per. cent to produce a solution 27 of nitrogen dioxide in acid; (ii) heating 18, 19 the solution to evolve nitrogen dioxide 31 therefrom; and returning the liquor to stage (b) (i) above; and (iii) cooling 20 the evolved nitrogen dioxide together with unreacted nitrogen dioxide from the fifth stage below to form liquid nitrogen dioxide 13; (c) in a third stage, constituting a first chemical absorption stage 14, contacting (i) superazeotropic nitric acid 36 and (ii) water or a dilute aqueous solution of nitric acid 30 with a third gas 38 comprising nitrogen dioxide and oxygen, said third gas comprising the gaseous product of a second chemical absorption stage 15, to produce nitric acid 40 having a concentration of from 70 to 80 wt. per cent and a fourth gas 39 comprising unreacted nitrogen dioxide; (d) in a fourth stage 15, constituting the second chemical absorption stage, treating the nitric acid 40 produced in the third stage and a fraction 41 of the liquid nitrogen dioxide produced in the second stage with air 44,47 to produce superazeotropic nitric acid 45 having a concentration of up to 90 wt. per cent of said third gas 38; and (e) in a fifth stage, delivering a further fraction 43 of the liquid nitrogen dioxide produced in the second stage to the upper portion of a distillation column 16 and delivering the superazeotropic nitric acid 45 produced in the fourth stage to the middle portion of the column, so as to form in the column the desired nitric acid 46 having a concentration of at least 98 wt. per cent, said desired nitric acid being removed from the column at a position disposed between the position of introduction of the liquid nitrogen dioxide and the position of introduction of the superazeotropic nitric acid, unreacted superazeotropic nitric acid 36 being removed from the lower portion of the column and returned to the third stage 14 of the process, and unreacted nitrogen dioxide 32 being removed in gaseous form from the column and returned to the second stage of the process.
