1528043 Preparation of substituted benzyl nitrile derivatives SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 7 July 1976 [9 July 1975 (2)] 28869/75 and 28900/75 Heading C2C Substituted-benzyl nitrile derivatives of the general formulain which Hal refers to halogen atom and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> each represents an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms are prepared by (a) reacting a benzyl halide of the general formula in which X represents a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, with a substantially equimolar amount of an alkali metal cyanide and a quaternary ammonium compound, either in the absence of added water or using a volume ratio of water to the compound of Formula II below 0À1 : 1, and (b) reacting the benzyl nitrile derivative of formula thus formed with a molar excess of a secondary alkyl chloride of the formula R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>CHO in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide.
