Abstract

1523990 Safety helmets NORTON CO 23 Dec 1976 [30 Dec 1975] 53858/76 Heading A3V A plastic face shield 10 is secured to a frame 14 of a helmet by means of a cam 20 that is rotatably mounted on the frame 14. The cam 20 projects into an elongated slot 16 in the shield 20 and the dimensions of the cam 20 are such that its maximum length is slightly greater than the minor dimension of the slot 16. Starting from the setting shown in Fig. 2 the cam is rotated by means of a handle 24 through 180‹ in a clockwise direction. As the cam passes through the 90‹ setting, shown in Fig. 3, it temporarily distorts the plastics material. The cam then rotates to the 180‹ setting Fig. 4 (not shown) in which the shield is trapped between the handle 24 and the frame 14. Accidental unlocking of the cam 20 is avoided by the necessity for the cam 20 to distort the face shield on its return journey.
