Abstract

1523583 Mixing and aerating liquids IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 July 1975 [14 Aug 1974 19 May 1975] 35754/74 and 21288/75 Heading B1C [Also in Division C6] A growth limiting nutrient e.g. methanol, may be supplied to culture medium in a fermenter e.g. one consisting essentially of a riser and a downcomer, through distribution tubes 1, Fig. 1, having spirally or diametrically opposed, perforations (not shown) throughout their lengths, those in the lower part of the tubes being spaced the more closely together. The circular manifolds 2 may also be perforated. The arrangement may comprise two coaxial sets of tubes. Alternatively, radial spargers 15, Fig. 7, may be located within slots 14 in a series of layers of baffles 13. Fig. 6 depicts the geometric arrangement of baffles and spargers in an annular riser or downriser. The baffles may be staggered and the spargers bent to shape.
