Abstract

1521752 Cooling and heating apparatus for body portions VARI-TEMP MFG CO 17 Sept 1975 38193/75 Heading A5R [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for cooling or selectively heating and cooling a body portion, comprises a copper cooling coil for being formed to the shape of the body portion, a flexible jacket 22 in which the coil is received and having means for securing the jacket around the body portion, a compressor 12 and a condenser 14 for liquefying a refrigerant, and conduit members 16 for supplying the refrigerant to and from the coil. In order that the apparatus may provide heat or cooling, a 4-way reversing valve is provided to reverse the flow of refrigerant. The compressor and the condenser are mounted on a platform 27 which, when a horse is being treated, may be saddle-shaped. The jacket comprises front and back panels forming a pocket for the coil. The open top of the jacket may be closed by a zip, snap fasteners or complementary hook and loop strips. The exterior jacket panel is insulated. The jacket is secured around the body portion by a strap, a zip, snap fasteners, buttons, belts, buckles or complementary interengaging hook and loop strips. The jacket may comprise fabric or leather and may be expansible. The apparatus may be operated by A.C. current or a battery may be mounted on the platform, and a thermostat may regulate the amount of cooling. A timer may be provided to set the length of time for cooling. More than one coil may be used with a single condenser and compressor (see Fig. 5).
