Abstract

1521425 Mixing apparatus WACKER CHEMIE GmbH 5 May 1976 [9 May 1975] 18484/76 Addition to 1505740 Heading BIC [Also in Division C3] High-speel mixing apparatus used to foam pulverulent or granular foamable vinyl chloride polymers by generating heat by friction within the mixer (see Div. C3) comprises a concentric rotary mixer with a rotor mounted within a stator and with an annular gap between the rotor and stator through which the foamable polymers can be passed. The mixer may be as shown in Fig. 1, wherein a cylindrical stator 8 has coaxially situated therein a cylindrical rotor 18 which is driven by an electric motor (not shown) by means of drive shaft 9 in housing 13; a feed screw 6 supplies the mixing zone consisting of the annular gap 19; rotor 18 has, below the feed screw 6, on its surface lozenge-shaped studs whose sides define two helices of different pitch and the inner surface of stator 8 may have vertical ribs and grooves; flowable additives may be fed into the mixing zone 19 via inlet 3 and the foamed mixture leaves the mixer through an outlet (not shown) below 19; inlet 4 and outlet 5 are used for heating or cooling fluids jacketing the stator 8; drive shaft 9 has a seal 10 supplied with sealing liquid via inlet 12 and outlet 11. A mixer similar to Fig. 1 is shown in Fig. 2 having a rotor 18 which is part cylindrical and part frustoconical with stator 8 being of similar shape; feed screws 15 and 16 supply two pre-heating zones, the composition entering 16 under pressure and 17 constitutes the mixing zone.
