Abstract
1519772 Flame-resistant fibrous composition CAPE ASBESTOS CO Ltd 11 July 1975 [23 April 1974] 17646/74 Heading C3N A flame-resistant composition comprises a non-flammable fibrous material, silica as a filler and a solution of aluminium phosphate in orthophosphoric acid as a binder. The non- flammable fibrous material may be glass wool, glass fibre, asbestos or mineral wool. The composition may also include cellulose and/or sisal fibres and/or a porous mineral material such as puricol or perlite. The aluminium phosphate may be prepared by reacting an aluminacontaining mineral such as kaolin or fireclay with concentrated ortho-phosphoric acid. The atomic ratio of Al : P in the binder may be 1 : 3-1 : 6 and the orthophosphoric acid used in the binder solution may have a concentration of 50-100% by weight. An article may be produced from the composition by moulding the composition under pressure and heat-treating the moulded article to harden the composition. The heattreatment may involve a step-wise increase of temperature, e.g. heating to 60-130‹ C. for 8-24 hours and then at 270‹ C. for 1-24 hours.
