Abstract
1518746 Immobilized enzymes W R GRACE & CO 9 June 1976 [10 June 1975 24 Dec 1975] 23919/76 Headings C3H and C3R A process of immobilizing a biological material selected from one or more of (a) a protein (b) a co-enzyme having at least one primary or secondary amino group per molecule (c) an enzyme, together with a co-enzyme and (d) a non-protein antibiotic having at least one primary or secondary amino group per molecule, the process comprising (1) incorporating the biological material in an excess of an isocyanate capped liquid polyurethane prepolymer to form a resulting mixture, the NCO groups in the prepolymer being present in a molar excess over amino groups of the biological material reactive with the NCO groups and (2) curing the resulting mixture by contacting it with an amount of a curing agent effective for immobilizing the biological material, under foam-forming or non-foam-forming conditions, the resulting mixture being shaped before curing, at least when the biological material consists of a protein, into a self-supporting article or a supported film. Examples describe the support of #- nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide, and alcohol dehydrogenase on polyurethane foam. Other supported enzymes include glucose oxidase, peroxidase, and urease. Examples 1-3 describe the preparation of prepolymers from polyethylene glycol and toluene diisocyanate, polyethylene glycol and trimethylol propane, and glycerol and ethylene oxide.
