Abstract
1517845 Oxide-coated glass PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 23 Jan 1976 [27 Jan 1975] 02583/76 Heading C1M The surface of a glass substrate is contacted with colour-imparting metal or alloy at an elevated temperature so that the metal(s) migrate(s) into the surface, and then contacted with a compostion comprising one or more metal compounds at a sufficiently high temperature to convert the compounds to the corresponding metal oxide(s), which is (are) deposited on the surface. The upper surface of a glass ribbon produced by a float process may be contacted with a body of molten metal or alloy, and migration assisted by an electric current passed between the body and the float bath. The body may be an alloy of Sn, Bi or Pb with Li, Na, Zn, Mg, Al, Si, Ti, Mn, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or a rare earth metal, an alloy of Sn with K or V, or an alloy of Bi or Pb with Ag, Au, As, Sb, In or a platinum-group metal. The compound converted to the oxide may be an organic salt (e.g. an acetylacetonate) of Co, Fe, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, V or Ti, preferably in solution in a hydrocarbon, halocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. methylene chloride). The glass is preferably exposed to an oxidizing atmosphere between the metal migration and the oxide coating stages. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,151,853.
