1516138 Securing bag necks THURNE ENG CO Ltd 3 Sept 1976 [4 Sept 1975] 36501/75 B8C The gathered neck 16, Fig. 3, of a bag is surrounded and enclosed by an adhesive tape tie comprising two lengths of pressure sensitive adhesive tape 12 stuck together with their adhesive faces towards one another, tabs 13 being provided at at least one end of the adhesive tapes to cover the adhesive faces of the tapes to prevent them being stuck together at said end or ends and so allowing the tabs to be gripped to pull the tapes apart. In a machine for securing the ties about gathered bag necks adhesives tapes 1, Fig. 1, are fed from rolls 2 and paper strips 4 are fed intermittently by feed rolls 7 to scissor blades 8 which cut the strips 4 into tabs which are thus applied at intervals along the tapes 1. The tapes 1 are then fed together between a pair of rollers 11. Gathered bag necks are also fed by a pair of rubber belts 9 to the rollers 11 and between the tapes 1. The rollers 11 have alternate notches and slots, the notches accommodating the thickness of a gathered bag neck, and the slots including cutting blades which sever the adhered tapes 1 adjacent or centrally of the applied paper tabs. The rollers 11, feed rollers 7, blades 8, and further feed rollers 3 may be operated in synchronism and may be activated only when a photo-electric detector, or an electrical switch detects the presence of a gathered bag neck adjacent the rollers 11.
