Abstract

1515629 Closure plugs for metallurgical converter tapholes STAHLWERKE PEINESALZGITTER AG 5 Nov 1976 [6 Nov 1975] 46258/76 Heading F4B A fusible closure plug 6 for a metallurgical converter taphole 4 is of frusto conical shape and comprises a metal top plate 7, a central tube 10 welded to the top plate, a deformable metal shell 8, and mouldable refractory material 9 filling the annular space between the central tube 10 and the shell 8. The closure plug 6 is insertable into the taphole 4 by means of pressure applied thereto via a holder 5 comprising a rod 11 carrying a plate 12 which abuts against the end of tube 10 at the base of the plug with the end part of the rod 11 inside the tube 10. Outwardly projecting barbs 13 on the shell 8 resist removal of the plug from the taphole. The physical properties of the plug 6 are such that, in use, the metal plate 7 withstands converter slag temporarily in contact with it when the converter is initially tilted but melts through when the converter is tilted further with the metal plate 7 in contact with molten steel in the converter. Preferably the metal plate or plates 7 and the shell 8 are of steel.
