1513860 Circumference gauge CIGARETTE COMPONENTS Ltd 16 April 1975 [17 April 1974] 44366/77 Divided out of 1513859 Heading G1M A plastics tape (not shown) clamped at both ends to movable plates 106, 108, Fig. 2 is looped at 104, Fig. 3, about a vertical axis so that a rod whose circumference or diameter is to be measured may be passed through the loop which is then tightened around the rod by rotating a cam disk 112 by means of a pulley 124 and a motor 114, Fig. 2. The disk moves cam followers 120, 122 attached to the plates 106, 108 which operate a linear measurement transducer 110 and a digital meter (not shown). The reading given on the meter is then compared with the reading for a calibrated rod. In operation, rod lengths are fed vertically down a feed tube 100, Fig. 3, through the loop 104 of the tape held in a measuring head 90, and each length is supported during measurement by the edge of the cam disk 112, Figs. 4-6. The disk is step by step rotated by the motor 114 which is controlled automatically by photo-cells 132, 134 co-operating with the rod and holes 138 in the disk and working in conjunction with timer switches. The disk 112 has an elliptical surface 116 or slots which moves the cam followers 120, 122 attached to plates 106, 108 holding the ends of the tape so that the tape loop is opened and closed as the disk 112 is stepped around. A vibrator 142 is used to settle the tape before each new rod is measured.
