Abstract

1513795 Boilers COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 14 April 1976 [20 May 1975] 21449/75 Heading F4A A boiler 1 for heating water comprises a shell 2, several combustor units 14a-14d within the shell 2 defining a water space 12 between each other and the shell 2, each combustor unit 14 having a fluidized bed combustion section 16 and a gas heat exchange section 22 located above the combusion section 16. As shown, each combustor unit 14 comprises a cylindrical body 15, the combustion section 16 having a gaspermeable base 18 on which a bed 20 of particulate material is supported. The beds 20 are interconnected by duets 21 to allow particles to circulate between adjacent beds 20. The gas heat exchange section 22, may include smoke tubes 24, water tubes 26, further fluidized beds 34, 36, or heat pipes 40. In operation, fuel is burnt in the beds 20 which are fluidized by air introduced into the shell 2 through an inlet 4 and a plenum chamber 5. The gaseous combustion products pass through the heat exchange sections where they release heat to the water in the water space 12, and the cooled gases pass to an outlet 6. The water space 12 has an inlet 8 and outlet 10. Further heat exchange surfaces may be provided within the beds 20. In an alternative embodiment, the water space also extends above the combustor units.
