Abstract

1512989 Measuring blood gases AIRCO INC 15 July 1975 [1 Aug 1974] 29644/75 Heading ASK [Also in Division G1] A device for the sampling of gases dissolved in blood comprises a catheter 1, a portion (4) of which is a membrane which is gas-but not blood-permeable, a carrier gas source 30 connectable for flow of carrier gas to one face of the membrane 4, means to supply to the membrane portion 4 carrier gas at substantially atmospheric pressure, the device being adapted to allow a volume of carrier gas to contact the membrane portion for a preselected period of time to allow establishment of an equilibrium between the carrier gas and the dissolved blood gases, and means which may comprise syringe 34 or a vacuum pump (35, Fig. 4 not shown) connected to the catheter to remove the equilibrated gases from the catheter. In the embodiment shown, syringe 34 draws the gases into valve 50 when the valve is in position I, then operation of the valve into position II allows flushing of the gases into analyser 49 by means of an auxiliary carrier gas stream from 47. The device of Fig. 4 (not shown) includes a calibration gas supply (61) connected upstream of the valve. Port 86 provides for the taking of blood samples.
