Abstract

1511691 Monitoring structural beam spacing R W WARD 6 May 1976 [7 Feb 1975] 5318/75 Headings G1M and G1N A method of monitoring the spacing of a plurality of pairs of structural members in a building or other civil engineering structure provides a sensor mounted on one of the members of each pair and having a "healthy" probe 2 monitored for constant contact with the other member and an "alert" probe 3 monitored for relative displacement between the two members in excess of a given value, say three millimetres. A single probe may serve both functions. In a preferred embodiment the probes are arranged so that the healthy probe holds a switch 6 closed while contact with the other member is maintained and the alert probe is spaced from the other member by a given relative displacement such that it closes a switch 7 if the given value of relative displacement is exceeded by the movement being monitored Preferably the alert probe actuates two micro-switches for movements of say 3 mm and 4 mm. Alternatively the alert probe may carry a ferrite core passing through a coil forming part of a bridge circuit providing a voltage indicating movement of the core. A plurality of such sensors are connected to collector stations (c) Fig. 2 (not shown) connected to a central scanner or computer (I) arranged to scan the sensors regularly and provide a coded print-out indicating the whereabouts of any sensor providing an alert signal or not providing a healthy signal.
