Abstract
1510961 Throttle controls PA MANAGEMENT OF CONSULTANTS Ltd 22 April 1975 [22 Jan 1974] 02849/74 Heading F1B The setting of the throttle valve of an I.C. engine is regulated by the inlet manifold pressure. The operator's accelerator control is connected to rod 12 which passes through one end-wall of cylinder 1 and carries a plunger 11, which forms an abutment for compression spring 5 which also abuts piston 4. Rod 8 is connected to the engine throttle valve and to piston 8 and compression sping 6 is positioned between piston 4 and the other end-wall of the cylinder. Atmospheric air vents 3 are formed in the one end-wall and a port 2 in the cylinder wall is connected to the inlet manifold, when inlet manifold pressure is low, e.g. when the engine is idling, the force of spring 6 is reduced by the vacuum acting on the piston, as the throttle opening increases, absolute pressure in the manifold rises and resistance to movement of rod 12 increases. In a modification, Fig. 2, the rod 12 passes freely through piston 4 and has a head 2 a. Spring 4 a is positioned between head 2 a and piston 4. Inlet manifold vacuum is communicated to the cylinder through port 2 and acts on piston 4. When the operators control is released a return spring on the control overcomes the effect of vacuum and spring 4 a.
