Abstract

1510467 Magnetic compass G COLLIS 25 June 1975 [12 July 1974] 31034/74 Heading G1F A magnetic compass comprises a compass card 11 mounted to rotate about a vertical axis within a housing 13, means for illuminating the compass card 11, an optical system 21, 22, 26 which projects a magnified image of part of the card 11 into an eye-piece, and a reference mark, e.g. a graticule 36, which may be aligned with an object whose bearing is to be determined, the bearing being read against the reference mark, the compass being without means for magnifying the object. As described, a sight (39), Fig. 2 (not shown) comprising a vertical luminized line e.g. a capillary tube filled with light emitting material, is mounted on a window 38 such that alignment of sight (39) and graticule 36 with the object allows the compass bearing thereof to be read off against the graticule 36. The transparent edge of the compass card 11 is illuminated by a tritium filled capsule 12, the card 11 being mounted within a capsule 10 filled with transparent liquid. Housing 13 is transparent or translucent to allow entry of light to further illuminate the card 11. Opaque wall 33 in the eye-piece allows light entering opaque housing 17 via window 37 not to enter the path of light from the compass card 11.
