Spray carburettors; vaporizers, external.-The mixture from a main carburettor is heated at starting by burning in a chamber 55 mixture supplied by an auxiliary carburettor 34, the chamber 55 partly surrounding the mixture pipe 22, the hot products from the chamber being drawn into the pipe through the plug 62. Both carburettors are subjected to the suction of the engine. The hole 56 in the plug is larger than the inlet 57 to the chamber to prevent back-fire and ensure a continuous flow from the auxiliary carburettor, when in use. A gauze 58 is placed at the inlet and a glazed inspection opening 55<1> allows the ignition spark for the heating-mixture to be seen. This spark is supplied from an induction coil 82 independent of the coil 73 for the cylinders. The main carburettor has a mixture throttle 26, a primary air-throttle 17, and a suction-actuated, secondary air-valve 20; when the primary airthrottle is closed, a stop on the valve bears on the spindle 21 of the secondary-air valve and also holds it closed. The auxiliary carburettor consists of a tube 37 screwed into the top of the float chamber; on the bottom of the tube is screwed a second tube with an inlet 45 for fuel, and air inlets 43, the air being drawn from the float chamber and passing through the annular chamber between the two tubes and holes 46 into the bore of the tube 37, where it forms an emulsion with the fuel. The emulsion passes out through holes 47 into a mixing-chamber 52, air being supplied thereto from the main air intake 15 through the pipe 50. The pipe 54 delivers the heating-mixture to the chamber 55. The main air-throttle 17 when closed restricts the air supply to the auxiliary carburettor and ensures a very rich mixture at starting.
