Abstract
1509365 Discharge lamps; lasers PERKIN ELMER CORP 16 June 1976 [17 June 1975] 24885/76 Addition to 1424251 Headings H1D and H1C To drive a laser rod 20 an electrodeless RF driven high pressure discharge lamp comprises loop 10 of transparent tube of 1-10 mm. bore, filled with 0À5-20 atm. cold of Kr or Xe or Ar, driven by a coil 12 circumferentially round the loop; the laser rod lies parallel to and is of similar length to the length of the loop. The lamp and laser rod lie inside flowing-water-filled jacket 26, with diffuse reflecting surface 30, possibly with a filter absorbing unwanted wavelengths between the lamp and laser or round the laser and, which may be Nd : YAG or Nd : YAlO3. The lamp may be started by an additional coil applying a high voltage, but preferably by a Tesla coil probe 16 brought close to an extension 18 of the lamp envelope. As the lamp discharges the RF source is matched to the changing load impedance by adjustment of capacitor 14, 15.
