Abstract

1508981 Cooling brakes; multi-disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 24 April 1975 [7 March 1974] 10159/74 Heading F2E A brake comprises an assembly of friction pairs carried by alternating rotor and stator discs 8, 9 respectively constrained for axial movement relative to coaxial tubes 6, 12 a coolant liquid (e.g. water) being circulated around the outside of the outer tube 12 and inside the inner tube 6, while a gas (e.g. carbon dioxide gas) for protecting the friction pairs is circulated between the tubes 6, 12 and over the discs 8, 9. The fluid 'protects' by inhibiting or reducing deterioration of the friction surfaces of the discs 8, 9 and it may be used with a catalyst. The illustrated embodiment shows a brake for a rail vehicle with a rotatable axle 1 to to which is secured a sleeve 12 constituting the outer tube, the inner tube being constituted by a stationary hub 6. Three angularly spaced hydraulic actuators 15 act via a thrust member 14 to apply axial pressure to the discs 8, 9 to apply the brake. The axial thickness of the discs 8, 9 which are made of carbon fibre decreases progressively from the actuated end towards the other end. To eliminate or reduce wear of the discs 8, 9 caused by oxidation thereof the protective non- oxidizing gas such as carbon dioxide is circulated over the discs 8, 9 within a sealed chamber 16 by means of an impeller 17 rotating with the axle 1. It is envisaged that the system may originally be filled with air of which the oxygen constituent is rapidly converted to oxides of carbon-the pressure of oxygen initially may aid bedding-in of the discs. The cooling water enters the hub through an inlet port 19 and flows along inside the hub into a chamber 20 and thence through passages 22, 23 into a tube 24 by which it is led to an outlet port 25. The ports 19, 25 are preferably connected to an external pump and the circuit may include a radiator or a tank forming a heat sink. In a further embodiment for mounting on a motor or gear-box shaft the outer tube is stationary and the inner tube rotates, the actuators being mounted outside the outer tube. It is envisaged that the disc stack could be clamped by actuators at both ends or by intermediate actuators. The stator and rotor members could be broken up into pads separately supported for axial movement.
