Abstract

1508627 Sutures ETHICON INC 26 Nov 1975 48602/75 Heading DIG A surgical suture comprises a length of suture material 16 having a needle 14 secured to one end and a spherical bead 18 affixed to the suture material 16 at a location spaced from the other end thereof, providing a tail 20 between bead 16 and said other end. The bead may be movably affixed to the suture material, in which case the attachment is made by crimping a deformable bead onto the suture material. The bead may be non-movably fixed to the suture material in which case the bead may be formed in situ from thermoplastic or epoxy resin material. Alternatively, a preformed bead may be adhesively secured to the suture material. The bead has a diameter of 0.5-1.5 mm, preferably 0.75-0.95 mm, tail 20 has a length of #-¢ inches, and the length between bead 18 and needle 14 is 6-8 inches preferably 7-9 inches. The suture material may be gut, silk, nylon, polyester, polyolefin, cellulosic material or P.T.F.E., and may be mono- or multifilament.
