Abstract

1508143 Cyclic ortho-boric acid esters BASF AG 6 Aug 1975 [7 Aug 1974] 32826/75 Heading C2B [Also in Division C5] Ortho-boric acid esters of the general formula in which R<SP>1</SP> is the divalent radical of an aliphatic polyol HO-R<SP>1</SP>-OH of 2-6 C atoms having the specified OH groups in the 1,2-, 1,3- or 2,3- positions and R<SP>2</SP> is of formula where n is 2-6, R is H or CH 3 and R<SP>3</SP> is H or C 1-4 alkyl, are prepared by heating 0À5-1À5 molar proportions of HO-R<SP>1</SP>-OH and 0À5- 2-0 molar proportions of HOR<SP>2</SP> together with 1 molar proportion of ortho-boric acid at 50- 150‹ C. and removing the water of reaction produced. The compound HO-R<SP>1</SP>-OH may be ethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol, 1,2- or 2,3-butylene glycol, pentaerythritol, pinacol or glycerol and HOR<SP>2</SP> may be di-, tri- or tetraethylene glycol or the methyl, ethyl or butyl monoether of triethylene glycol. The esters of Formula I are useful as constituents of glycol ether-based brake fluids.
