1507108 Centrifugal liquid pumps BORGWARNER CORP 27 May 1976 [15 Dec 1975] 22123/76 Heading F1C A centrifugal pump for liquids comprises an outer case in the form of a one piece annular barrel 11, Fig. 1, with end cover plates 14, 16, Fig. 2, the impeller being rotatable within a bore 39 in a volute 37 comprising spiral partitions 128, 129 defining respective volute passages 44, 43, passage 44 guiding liquid directly into discharge chamber 127 which connects with discharge pipe 29, and passage 43 directing liquid into discharge chamber 127 via bifurcated passage 137 divided by splitter (148), Fig. 4 (not shown), into two passages (138), (139), Fig. 7 (not shown), which lead into chamber 127. The impeller 115, which is driven via shaft 72 is of the double suction type having inlet eyes 117 and outlet eyes 118, inlet pipe 26 communicating with eyes 117 via passages 46, 47 in volute 37 and passages 123, 124 in plugs 53, 66 welded respectively to cover-plates 14, 16. Shaft 72 is sealed by throttle bushings 84, 86, liquid (which may be the same as that being pumped) delivered via conduits 103 and annular chamber 101 (indicated on the right of Fig. 2 only) at a pressure higher than that within the impeller chamber, being impelled via ports 102 and grooves 92 inwardly towards the impeller chamber, and outwardly between shaft and throttle bushing into annular chamber 104 from which most of it is discharged via conduit 107, a portion flowing outwardly into a bearing bracket 76 and draining via port 112.
