Sewing-machines; free - loop stitching. - Sewing- mechanism is provided for forming from a single thread a line of stitches comprising a series of headed loops, or plugs, as shown in Fig. 1, for reinforcing sheet material, such as boot soles. An awl 5 pierces the work, which is then fed through the length of a stitch, and the needle 20 rises through the hole so formed and draws a loop of thread held in the thread-guide 10 down through the work. A thread-finger 7 moves to bend the thread so that it is engaged by the hook of the needle in descending. A rock-shaft 11 carries an adjustable loop-stripper 19 and a loop-detainer 16 which enter the loop drawn down and remove it from the needle. As the take-up (not shown) draws up the loop, the shaft 11 is rocked sufficiently to withdraw the stripper 19 from the loop, but not sufficiently to withdraw the detainer 16 around which the loop is drawn tightly by the take-up to form the head of the loop. Further rotation of the shaft 11 withdraws the detainer 16 and the work is fed, the head of the loop being pressed flat against the underside of the work by contact with the work support 1 under the pressure of the presser-foot 3.
