Abstract
1505342 Telegraphy POST-OFFICE 4 March 1975 [5 Dec 1973] 56382/73 Heading H4P In a digital encoder receiving two streams of data pulses A, B and clock pulses to produce two streams of encoded data pulses E, F in synchronism with the clock pulses, input data coincident with each clock pulse is summed with output data coincident with the previous clock pulse, which output data is stored FF1, FF2 without being circulated. Pulse streams A, B and E, F are regarded as being in Gray code and are converted to and from binary in XOR gates G1, G3; AND gates G2, G6 ensure synchronization with the clock pulses. Addition of successive bits is effected in toggle flip-flops FF1, FF2 with a "carry" gate G4. Since the output is not circulated the operating speed of the encoder is comparable with the speed of its logic components. The encoder may be used with a 4-phase differentially coded phase shift keyed digital transmission system.
