Abstract
1504479 Purifying wet process phosphoric acid TOYO SODA MFG CO Ltd 31 Dec 1976 [13 Feb 1976] 54482/76 Heading C1A Dissolved silica is removed from wet process phosphoric acid which has been purified by extraction into an organic solvent of low water solubility followed by re-extraction from the organic solvent by water, and which contains silicon and fluorine impurities with an Si/F atomic ratio of less than 0À2:1 and has a phosphoric acid concentration of 20 to 65 wt. per cent as P 2 O 5 , by contacting the phosphoric acid with silica gel at a temperature of 2-100 C. The Si/F atomic ratio may be adjusted if necessary by addition of a fluorine containing compound prior to contacting with the silica gel, e.g. during an optional acid concentration step. Suitable fluorine compounds specified are HF, NH 4 F and NaF. Organic impurities are preferably removed before contacting the phosphoric acid with the silica gel, by treatment with active carbon or an oxidizing agent. The phosphoric acid may be contacted with the silica gel by passing it through a column filled with the silica gel. Suitable organic solvents specified for the extraction step are n-butanol, isoamyl alcohol and tributyl phosphate.
