Abstract

1504331 Photoelectric measurement of gaps A R L ROSS 16 Jan 1976 [20 Jan 1975] 2287/75 Heading G1A. The width of a gap is measured by determining the attenuation of a light beam caused by two members inserted in the gap and whose relative positions depend of the gap width. In Fig. 1 the relative positions of members A1 and A2 vary with the gap, influencing the passage of light from fibre Fl to fibre F2. In Fig. 2 members A11 and A2 have a separation depending on the gap, and this influences the passage of light between the fibres. In Fig. 3A the fibres are themselves displaced away from a co-axial positions by an amount depending on the gap; a suitable means for displacing the fibres is shown in Fig. 3B (not shown) where arms A13, A22 are inserted into the gap G and the passage of light from one fibre to the other varies with the arm separation.
