Abstract

1503934 Heat-curable coatings COATINGS FOR INDUSTRY INC 12 Feb 1975 [12 Feb 1974] 5907/75 Heading B2E [Also in Division C7] Coatings heat-curable into a water-insoluble material are obtained from aqueous compositions comprising (1) a dissolved phosphate (2) a dissolved dichromate and/or molybdate (3) a particulate solid inorganic material and (4) an amine in amount sufficient to reduce the temperature at which the coating can be cured. Compound (1) may be ortho-, meta-, pyro-, or hypo-phosphoric acid or a salt thereof (2) may be an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or Zn dichromate (or chromate, which hydrolysis to dichromate in the acid solution) or CrO 3 , molybdic acid or anhydride. or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or Zn molybdate, (3) may be a metal, e.g. Al, Cu, Ni or Ag, an alloy, e.g. Co-Al or Al-Mn, a mixed or complex oxide, a silicate, silica, zircon, Cr 2 O 3 , quartz. Al 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , ZrO 2 , BeO, SiC, MoS 2 , WC, BN, a metal nitride, boride, titanate, zirconate or sulphide or graphite and (4) may be an aliphatic-, alkanol-, hydroxyl-, aralkyl-. aromatic- or polv-amine or a nitrogen heterocycle, specifically one or more of MeNH 2 , Et 2 NH, Pr 3 N, dicyclohexylamine, diethanolamine, diethyl hydroxylamine, benzylamine, phenethylamine, aniline, toluidine, xylidine, mesidine, 1-naphthylamine, 3-biphenyl amine, ethylene diamine, 1-2, butanediamine, 1, 4-naphthalenediamine, 1, 2, 3-benzenetriamine, diethylenetramine, triethylene tetramine, morpholine or piperidine. Preferred amounts of the above are (1) 1-6 mole/l (2) 0.15-3.5 mole/l (3) 20-2000 g/l and (4) 0.02-0.3 mole/I; the composition may also contain 1-6 mole/l dissolved metal, e.g. alkali- or alkaline earth metal or Al or Zn, added either as metal, oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, or incidental to the phosphate, chromate or molybdate; the composition has pH 2-4 and is applied by spray, roller, brush, electrostatic spray or electrophoretically, to ferrous metal, glass, ceramic, refractory, wood or plastics and cured, e.g. for 4-6 hour at 180‹F, 1 hour at 225‹F or 15-30 min at 300-500‹F.
