Abstract

1503908 Electro-chemical CO 2 sensor SOCIAL SERVICES SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 22 Sept 1975 [20 Sept 1974] 41158/74 Heading G1N A carbon dioxide sensor comprises a sensing electrode 13 of palladium-hydrogen or iridiumhydrogen, a reference silver/silver halide electrode 15, an electrolyte 21 including bicarbonate and halide ions (the same as in the reference electrode) and a carbon dioxide permeable membrane 22 retaining the electrolyte in contact with the electrodes. The sensor also responds to oxygen. To allow compensation for this, a third electrode 12 of palladium or iridium (the same metal as in the sensing electrode) is placed in contact with the electrolyte, the voltage between this third electrode and the reference electrode being a measure of oxygen, which value can be subtracted from the sum value (CO 2 + O 2 ) obtained between sensor and reference electrodes. The preferred electrode metal is palladium and the preferred halide chloride. The electrolyte preferably comprises MNaCl + 10<SP>-2</SP>MNaHCO 3 but may be either aqueous or in solid form. The membrane may be polystyrene or acrylic resin and is preferably water permeable when the electrolyte is solid. As an alternative, a solid electrolyte may be incorporated in a water absorbent membrane. The sensor is preferably mounted on a catheter 17 and the measurement is made by high impedance voltmeter (# 10<SP>14</SP> ohms). The method of preparing the palladium-hydrogen and iridium-hydrogen electrodes by electrolysis is described.
