Abstract

1502461 Fluidized bed steam generators; tubular heat exchangers WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 31 Oct 1975 [4 Nov 1974] 45447/75 Headings F4A and F4S In a heat exchanger used in fluidized bed steam generators, heat is exchanged from a primary fluid (e.g. liquid sodium) circulating in a bundle of tubes 3 to a secondary fluid (e.g. water and/or steam) circulating in a bundle of tubes 5, the tube bundles being separated by a vertical wall 9. Particulate material is disposed in a heat exchange vessel 7 and fluidized by a gas, such as helium, supplied below a perforated distributer plate 11 to form a fluidized bed within the vessel 7. Figure 4 illustrates a plurality of fluidized bed heat exchangers arranged to form a steam generator. Liquid metal flows in series through the primary tube bundle 3 in the various fluidized beds and in counterflow relation to the water and/or steam flowing in the secondary tube bundles 5 juxtaposed with the primary tube bundles 3 in the fluidized beds. Fluidizing gas is supplied to each fluidized bed from a common duct 21 and a cyclone separator 23 removes particulate material from the effluent gases and an analyser 25 is associated with the separators to detect water, liquid metal or both within the effluent gases. The gases then flow through a filter 26 and a heat exchanger 27 which heats the influent gas. After being cooled in the heat exchanger 27, the effluent gases flow through a gas cooler 29. A pump or blower 31 takes its suction from the gas cooler 29 and returns the gases via the heat exchanger 27 to the fluidized beds.
