Abstract
1501697 Coalescing and settling particles PIELKENROOD - VINITEX BV 3 April 1975 [12 April 1974] 13596/75 Heading BID In an apparatus for effecting the growth of particles in a flowing suspension which is to be separated by settling the apparatus comprising chambers connected in series and chambers connected in parallel, the suspension flows vertically through a plurality of chambers, the flows in successive chambers being in opposite directions, and the suspension is divided into parallel streams during its flow through the apparatus. In use, wall friction in the chambers causes differences in the velocity of the particles in the suspension so that coalescence of the particles occurs. The flow velocity of the suspension at any point in the chambers is such that no separation of the particles takes place in the chambers and is lower than the velocity at which coalesced particles would be disrupted by shearing action as a consequence of the velocity gradients in the vicinity of that point. In the embodiment shown, suspension from trough 5 passes through chambers 13, 14. Suspension from chamber 14 is passed into two chambers 16 (only one shown) connected in parallel and from each chamber 16 the suspension flows into two chambers 17 arranged in parallel. Each chamber 17 supplies suspension to a supply chamber 7 containing a plate separator 2 e.g. as described in Specification 1295123. The chambers may be subdivided by corrugated plates. Tank 1 may be metal or concrete. The walls of the chambers may be detachably mounted in grooves.
