Abstract

1501690 Cutting apparatus CELLOGLASS Ltd 30 July 1976 [22 Aug 1975] 34868/75 Heading B4B Apparatus for cutting transversely a travelling web 14 of plastics film laminated to successive overlapping sheets of a substrate 15, the film and sheets forming a laminated strip, the apparatus comprising a rotary knife 12, means for drawing the strip past the knife, and means for continuously driving the knife via a slipping clutch 27 to rotate the knife whereby, in operation, the knife is rotated to a cutting position against a face of the strip with a cutting edge of the knife facing but spaced from an adjacent approaching underlap or overlap of the two film-connected sheets 15, the knife being held in its cutting position with the clutch slipping until it has cut at the approaching underlap or overlap at least a marginal portion of the film drawn past it and the rotation of the knife is continued until the knife again reaches its cutting position. A number of knives 12 are mounted on a holder 18 which is rotated via the slip clutch 27, by means of an electric motor 21 and chain drive 26, 32, 36. The laminated strip is fed from a roll 10 by a first pair of feed rollers 11 and, downstream of the knife, by a second pair 13 rotatable at a faster speed. After the marginal portion of the strip has been cut by the knife, the leading end thereof is engaged by the rollers 13 thereby causing a snatching effect to sever completely one overlapping sheet from the other. In a modification a second knife device may be mounted on the opposite side of the strip and the complete severance may be effected by means other than the faster rotating rollers 13.
