Abstract
1500366 Force measuring device R P DUNNE 21 Feb 1975 [22 Feb 1974] 7371/75 Heading G1G A force measuring device comprises a filament or beam vibrated at a particular frequency by an excitation force, output means for detecting the period of the vibration, which output means has its output modified from a first value to a corrected value to compensate for those changes in the length of the filament or beam which result from the application to the filament or beam of the force to be measured. As described the vibrating filament pre-tensioning force is low and, under application of the force to be measured, the vibration signal (or multiple or submultiple thereof) is available measured at 1 and fed to sample/reset control logic 2. Counter 4 measures the number of reference clockpulses from 3 occuring between output pulses from 2, to produce an output number representing the period of the vibrating filament. This value is stored at 5 and is squared to produce an output 1/f<SP>2</SP> where f is filament frequency, at 6. Store 7 stores a number K which represents a constant of proportionality calculated iteratively or obtained experimentally and relates the filament length to the amount of pre-tensioning load thereon.: It is stated that: where W 1 is the load on the filament to be measured plus the pre-tensioning load. Subtractor 8 produces the denominator of the above expression and the output of inverter 9 is a number representing W 1 . The value of the pre-tensioning load is stored at 10 and subtracted from W 1 in subtractor 11, to produce an output representing the load to be measured the value of which is adjusted in multiplier 13 by a scaling or "spanning" factor fed from store 12. The scaled value is then processed/ indicated/or recorded at 14. It is stated that the present invention produces an accuracy of measurement of two decimal magnitudes better than prior art. The measured load may act with or oppose the pre-tensioned load which may be tensile or compressive.
